Sasha Selvaraj, better known by her stage name Ranjini, is a Singapore born Indian actress known for her roles in Tamil , Malayalam films. She also did few Telugu films. She was the leading actress from 1985 to 1992.
Ranjini made her debut in the 1985 Tamil film Muthal Mariyathai directed by Bharathiraja.[1] In 1987, she acted in Lenin Rajendran's Swathi Thirunal, a biopic on the Travancore ruler of the same name. Her second Malayalam film Chithram (1988), written and directed by Priyadarshan, went on to become a huge box office success.

Mohanlal-Ranjini was considered a golden duo in Malaylam cinema as all their films were commercial successes.[2]Koothara, directed by Srinath Rajendran, marked her comeback to acting after a hiatus of two decades.
Career[edit]
Ranjini was born in Singapore as Sasha to Selvaraj and Lilly, belonging to fourth generation residents of Singapore, with roots from Tirunelveli.[3] She was introduced to films by famous director Bharathiraja, a friend of her father. Bharathiraja gave her the screen name of 'Ranjini' for his 1985 film Muthal Mariyathai. Ranjini, whose family was in Singapore then had flown down to Chennai taking a break from studies with the hope that the shooting would get over within two weeks.[4]
Her first Malayalam film was Swathi Thirunal in 1987, directed by Lenin Rajendran. The film was a critical success and she won The Cinema Express Award for Best Actress. She went on to act in Malayalam films like Chithram, Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu (1988) and Kottayam Kunjachan (1990).
Ranjini quit acting in films at the peak of her career to move to London, where she continued her studies.[5] Her last film was Customs Diary (1993), directed by TS Suresh Babu. In London, she also did a degree in credit management and later acquired a law degree. She also worked for the BBC for a short time.[4] She is a graduate lawyer and is currently working as a joint director in an overseas education institution in Kochi, Kerala. She is married to Malayali businessman Pierre Kombara.[4]
Ranjini was in the committee of 'Nirbhaya-Kochi', an initiative of district administration under Ernakulam District Collector, MG Rajamanickam IAS (The Welfare for Women & Children Safety) in 2014. She was also in the founding committee of 'Stree', a project for Women and Health under Maradu municipality in 2016. She regularly appears as a panelist on TV debates for various social topics on National, Malayalam and Tamil Channels. In 2018, she was one of 12 elite panelists invited by The National Commission for Women to a discussion on sexual harassment in the workplace.

She was born on 23 April 1980 in Kochi, Kerala, India. Since childhood, she was interested in acting and modelling. She was noticed firstafter she won the title of Miss Kerala 2000. Ranjini gained more popularity as a host of the singing reality TV show, Star Singer that aired on Asianet. She hosted five seasons of that show. In Malayalam industry, she was highly criticised for her poor Malayalam accent and is called to be the Mother of Modern Malayalam.

She is a hardworking and most talented Indian girl who is approximately 5’ 2” tall and weighs around 55 kg. She has dark brown eyes and black hair.

Career
She did her schooling at The Choice School, Kochi, Kerala and graduation (Bachelor of Arts) in English Literature at St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, Kerala. After graduation, she started working in an IT company in Bangalore. After two years of working, she left the job and went abroad for further studies and completed her master’s degree in Business Administration.
At the age of 6, she played her first role of a school kid in the Malayalam film Geetham. After completing studies, she returned to Kerala to join the Malayalam entertainment industry. In 2000, she won the title of Femina Miss Kerala. In 2007, Ranjini started hosting the Asianet’s famous TV show Star Singer for which she won the Asianet Television Award for Best Anchor.
In 2011, she made her first cameo appearance in the Malayalam film China Town. After that, she did four more Malayalam films such as Thalsamayam Oru Penkutty (2012), Entry (2013), What The F (WTF) (2013), and Otta Oruthiyum Shariyalla (2013).
In 2013, she judged the Malayalam reality TV show Sundari Niyum Sundaran Njanum. She also appeared as a guest at various TV shows like Comedy Stars Season 2, Comedy Super Nights, Badai Bungalow, Onnum Onnum Moonu, Ashwamedham, etc. She was also the player of Kerala Royals team in 2016 in the Celebrity Badminton League (CBL).

Controversies
- In 2011, film actor Jagathy Sreekumar openly criticised Ranjini during the finale of singing reality show Star Singer for her alleged fake accent and for passing judgments to the contestants in spite of being a host.
- In 2013, Ranjini registered a complaint against the flight passenger, Binoy Cherian, alleging that he accused her at the Nedumbaserry Airport by using abusive language. After that whole incident, Kochurani, the wife of Binoy Cherian also filed a complaint against her.
- In 2014, V. K. Venkitachalam of Heritage Animal Task Force filed a complaint against actresses, Ranjini Haridas, and Nazriya Nazim at the Central Animal Welfare Board and the Forest Department claimed that they used the elephants of Forest Department for safari without taking permission of the Central Animal Welfare Board.
